Make some noise!
You're all excited for the big action, you've come up with some hard-hitting chants to lead the crowd, when day-of 30-minutes into the march, you lose your voice! Oh no!
It's happened to so many of us, it's totally understandable... AND there are so many ways that we can prevent temporary and permanent vocal damage that all activists, whether we're chant-leaders or participants, can incorporate to protect our voices.
In this workshop we learn:
Parts of your vocal-body instrument and their functions
How to prepare your voice and your comrades' voices before a major action or performance
Tips for protecting your voice day-of your direct action
How to care for yourself in the case of vocal damage to prevent chronic vocal stress problems and potential permanent damage
Our voices are our body's instrument for making good trouble. It is important for organizers to keep our voices healthy so we can keep making our demands loud and clear.
Each workshop is altered based on the needs and requests of your organization. This includes researching and incorporating songs specific to your movement's heritage. In some cases, workshop personalization also includes partnering with musicians within your organization so they feel uplifted and centered before, during, and after the workshop.
Workshops can be one-off community building events and/or they can be about growing musical practices within your organization's culture. If you're looking to incorporate more live + participatory music into your organization's community events and direct actions, we can create a strategy together that incorporates long-term goals and feedback processes.
