Electoral Literacy

PG County Special Elections are coming up!

In political work, elections are one lever that help us win major change. We need representatives who can help build a brighter future. Neglecting to participate in elections because both sides are flawed ends up damaging our democracy deeply.

PRIMARIES are where the real battle for progressives lives. There are a lot of SuperPAC-funded Dems out here voting poorly and doing the least.

There's also a lot of gerrymandering around the country. Every 10 years there is a census re-drawing of the map, which provides an opportunity to redraw the maps so that they make more sense and are demographically more representative of the districts. Show up to redistricting meetings and find the political leaders who are advocating for non-gerrymandered representation!

Harass your representatives once they are in office if they are terrible; build relationships if they are mid-to-OK. I lead with kindness first until they really let me down (Mr. Ivey with your $64K from AIPAC really letting me down).

OpenSecrets is a great tool to see if your congresspeople are decent. Search their name for a breakdown of their donors. Don't like their list? Call them out at a townhall or run against them.
